Is it Still Clean?

"There is a destiny that makes us brothers. None goes his way alone—All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own." —Unknown

"If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking."

It has been said that someday even clean meat would become unsafe, or "unclean." Could that time be now? Are some meats still safe? Let's take a little closer look.

An article entitled "Food-borne Illness, a Growing Threat to Public Health," American Medical News, June 10, 1996, asserted,

... between 6.5 million and 81 million Americans experience food-borne illnesses each year, and about 9,000 die as a result. Since no federally inspected meat-processing plant is required to check for these microbes, much of the food sold for consumption is loaded with these deadly bacteria. In fact, from 1980 to 1992, deaths due to infectious diseases has risen 58% in this country. Modern Manna, Jan./Feb. 1997, Vol.3, No.1, pg. 19.

Obviously, what we consume has a tremendous and lasting effect on us personally and on our future. Over one hundred years ago an author made these profound observations in regard to meat eating,

If meat eating was ever healthful, it is not safe now. Cancers, tumors, and pulmonary diseases are largely caused by meat eating. (emphases supplied) 1

Over the years this statement has been proven true. More recently John Robbins said virtually the same thing summing it all up with this comment,

Unfortunately, uncontaminated fish and other animal products may simply no longer Exist. Diet for a New America, pg. 334.
