Heavenly Carnivores?

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." —Gandhi

Imagine with me for a moment: you are taking a cool, quiet, evening walk along the River of Life. After enjoying watching a school of rainbow trout playfully swimming about the river for a while, you call to one of them. When it reaches you, you bend down and, to the poor fish's complete astonishment, you pick him up and carry him home for your supper! This picture doesn't seem quite right, does it? The Bible tells us, "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death" 1 Corinthians 15:26.

And again speaking of the second coming of Christ and the new earth, Paul says,

...Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory 1 Corinthians 15:54, 55?

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea Isaiah 11:9.

These verses say that there will be no killing, carnage or death in the new earth, and that the reason for the peace and harmony is the knowledge of the Lord. As we come to know Him better day by day here, we will take on the tender, loving attributes of Jesus even now. This will change the most personal aspects of our lives, including how we eat and recreate. If God cares individually for each sparrow that falls (Matthew 10:29), how must His heart ache at the mass destruction and intense suffering of His creatures every day!
