"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." —Unknown

"Be content with what you have, but never with what you are." —Unknown

Often Americans unknowingly eat what was supposedly thrown away, but, for the sake of money, is simply reprocessed, neatly renamed and sold for human consumption. This opens the door to innumerable types of diseases that otherwise would never afflict the human race.

Gray horses, which have a predisposition for melanoma [see Appendix 7], always are a concern when they arrive at a slaughter plant or are presented for purchase [for slaughter]. Some openly display tumors, while others appear completely normal until they are eviscerated [cut in half] and examined. Then the affliction is discovered. The end result, either way, is a carcass that is relegated to the offal [see Appendix 8] bin. The offal is sent by truck to rendering plants, where it is turned into a variety of products... The Horse, December 1999, pg. 27.

What is done with the offal at the rendering plants? First it is added to road kills, euthanized pets, and dead farm animals. The carcasses are then "recycled."

...by sending animal bodies through a hammermill, crushing bones and chopping carcasses. Mixed with animal wastes from slaughterhouses, it is now called ‘meat by-products' or [‘meat-meal']. Vegetarian Cats and Dogs, third edition, pg. 24.

In the U.S., 50% of the total tonnage of [animals slaughtered for meat] is considered unfit for human consumption. Slaughterhouses disposed of 44 billion pounds of such rejects, labeled ‘by-products,' in 1994. Rendering plants neatly converted that unimaginable carnage of animals into four broad categories of products:

1) Pet and animal food

2) Industrial products, i.e., rubber, pesticides

3) Soaps and personal care products

4) Tallow, gelatin, and other human foods! Ibid, pg. 25. (emphesis added)

Are you hungry for some gelatin fruit salad or marshmallows? Maybe some candies, especially the gummy kind? Change your mind? Even many gelatin capsules used for medication and most commercial self-contained pills are made or held together with this unimaginable carnage that has been neatly recycled.

All communities...dispose of dead bodies by cremation or burial, but always away from the city, not downtown. Yet, human beings have made their own stomachs the mobile mortuary, the grave yard, the cemetery for dead goats, cocks, pigs and other animals, inviting fatal diseases like cancer. Vegetarian Cats and Dogs, James A. Peden, pg. 29

An inglorious thought! Thankfully there are often good alternatives.
